Attuning with the teaching of the Wisdom, and applying what is learned from this teaching, can make a substantial contribution to the health of the individual. Let us look at some aspects of this.
The Wisdom teaches us that it is desirable that we take responsibility for own health.
Through meditation, it is possible to learn to maintain peace of mind and calm through all adversity. This is helped with the recognition that whilst we may not always be aware of the causes of events that occur to us, we know from the teaching of the Wisdom that every such event is an opportunity for learning and growth in spiritual awareness.
Being aware of the event as an opportunity - and being aware of our responsibility for our emotional reaction to such events - enables us to become detached and calmly observe these events, remaining unruffled what’ere may befall.
Being peaceful and calm in all situations enables us to avoid the tension and stress that lead to medical difficulties.
The ability to control our emotional reaction to events is not only applicable to adverse situations. This ability enables feelings to be modified and made more constructive and appropriate – a feeling of boredom or mild despondency of can be changed to one of enthusiasm and a constructive approach to life by using the will to influence the emotions
It also helps to keep mentally active – this stimulates the mind and helps to defer the slow decay of creeping dementia. This mental activity may be through working with others – where possible helping them to resolve some problem which they are experiencing where your experience can be positively helpful.
Mental activity can also be encouraged through reading, research and learning something new,
As the body ages, organs become frail and have a tendency to collapse ! Despite this, it is possible to maintain physical agility and well being by following these practises.
It is good to have at least one relationship that is supportive and works well. Maybe with a partner, with children, or working colleagues. The key is to have people you love, respect and trust to challenge one's less constructive characteristics
Exercise is essential – walking is good but so is any form of activity in the open air cycling, swimming, playing golf whatever appeals to you.
Eat with moderation – enjoy your meals but do not over eat
Learn how to talk to your doctor and any consultants that may be involved with your health. If they understand that you are not afraid of death and that you see this as a natural process, then they will speak in an open manner and you will be able to discuss them what is most appropriate for your health. The doctor may feel that he should prescribe a drug in order to set your mind at ease, when in fact you would be able to manage perfectly well, and indeed might be better off, without such a potion.
Learn how to control the organs of your body. Using visualization it is possible to attune to your racing heart and encourage it to calm down and beat in a more of regular fashion. Similarly muscular aches and pains and other minor elements can be calmed and healed by visualizing them in a healthy state.
As with everything else in life, balance is important. There are practical physical problems such as damaged knees, where the attention of modern surgery may be exactly what is required.
Having a spiritual purpose for your life is vital. The sense of something that you have been inspired to achieve, the joy of working towards this objective, and the fulfilment and satisfaction that comes with making progress towards this objective, all helps towards encouraging the body and mind to thrive in order to achieve this objective.
And there will be a time when death approaches. This is as natural a process as being born and growing. The challenge is to approach it without fear and to recognize it as a vital stage in completing the present life.
Taking responsibility for our own physical and mental health is the first step in living a healthy and fulfilling life
